North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week – Week of March 12, 2024
Baseball Player of the Week – Jack Lutte, Denison
Denison first-year
Jack Lutte (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) hit .363 (7-11) with a 1.000 slugging percentage, eight RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, and a triple in three games last week. In a 13-6 win over Babson, Lutte was 3-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and a triple. In a tough loss against Kean (7-6), the first-year went 1-for-1 with one RBI. In the Big Red's final game of the week, an 18-3 win over Merchant Marine, Lutte was 3-for-4 with five RBI and a run.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Austin Luther, Wittenberg
Wittenberg senior
Austin Luther (Hughesville, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) earned a win on the mound in the Tiger's 6-1 win over Asbury. In seven innings, Luther allowed just one hit, two walks and one unearned run, while striking out five.
Men's Golf Athlete of the Week – J.F. Aber, Wittenberg
Wittenberg senior
J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) was the top performing Tiger in a loaded field of ranked competitors at the three-round Savannah Invitational. Aber carded a nine-under 207 (72-66-69) for fifth place out of 95 and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The senior finished just two strokes behind the medalist. Wittenberg collected a 10th-place finish in the 19-team field that featured 15 of the top-25 teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll.
Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Kyle Gould, Wittenberg
Wittenberg sophomore midfielder
Kyle Gould (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led the Tigers to a 2-0 week with wins over Chatham (14-9) and Emmanuel (15-10). In the win over Cougars, Gould recorded three points on two goals and one assist. In the win over Saints, the sophomore tallied nine points on eight goals and one assist to go along with seven ground balls and one caused turnover. His eight goals and nine points both tied for third best in program history for a single game. On the week, Gould combined for 12 points on 10 goals and two assists as well as eight ground balls and one caused turnover. With the help of Gould, the Tigers are 3-0 for the first time since 2014.
Women's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week – Lizzie Hardy, Wooster
Wooster sophomore midfielder
Lizzie Hardy (Gibsonia, PA/Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh) led the Fighting Scots with seven draw controls, three goals and three assists in an 18-12 win over Washington & Jefferson last week. Hardy also collected one ground ball in the win. The sophomores six points and three assists marked career-highs for the midfielder.
Softball Player of the Week – Angel Santellan, Hiram
Hiram senior
Angel Santellan (Lawndale, CA/Mira Costa) hit safely in eight games, which included five extra-base hits and eight RBI as the Terriers went 5-3 with wins over Regis (MA) (9-3), Neumann (1-0), Northland (4-2), Chatham (13-1), and Gordon (3-1). Santellan's week was highlighted by her performance against Regis, as the senior went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles. On the week, Santellan hit .444 (12-for-27) with a .630 slugging percentage, as she contributed at least one run in 6-of-8 games.
Softball Pitcher of the Week – Alex Romero-Salas, DePauw
DePauw sophomore
Alex Romero-Salas (Paranaque City, National Capital Region (NCR)/Calvert Academy) recorded two complete game wins against UW-Stevens Point (7-2) and Millikin (5-4) last week. Against the Pointers, Romero-Salas recorded seven strikeouts, two of which were caught looking and held her competitors to just three hits, one earned run, and one walk. Then against the Big Blue, Romero-Salas struck out four batters and scattered nine hits, allowing just two earned runs and one walk.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week – Blake Discher II, Wabash
Wabash sophomore
Blake Discher II (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Grosse Point South) posted a 3-1 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark on the team's spring break trip. Following a tough 2-6, 1-6 loss at No. 5 singles against Carthage (1-8) Monday morning, Discher claimed an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles with first-year
Eric Tien (Nichols Hills, OK/Casady) and a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles in the afternoon against Wentworth to help the Little Giants earn a 9-0 win. On Wednesday, the sophomore collected one of Wabash's three wins against Wheaton (3-6), picking up a straight-set victory of 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6 singles. Discher then picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles with sophomore
Tharakesh Ashokar (Chennai, India/Velammal Vidhyashram) and a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles in an 8-1 victory over St. John Fisher on Thursday.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week – Kassie Green, DePauw
DePauw junior
Kassie Green (Boca Raton, FL/Florida Virtual School) led the Tigers to a 6-3 win over Huntington on Saturday to garner the program's third-straight victory. Green collected wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles. The junior teamed up with sophomore
Valerie Doherty (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest) to earn an 8-6 doubles victory and followed that up with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win in singles.
NCAC Milestones & Records (March 4 – 10)
DePauw, Men's Golf – Junior
Manuel Loring (Madrid, Spain/San Patricio, El Soto) collected his first collegiate title, winning the Alabama Invasion by one stroke after shooting a six-over 149 (73-76). Loring led the field with five birdies, while the Tigers finished third among 10 teams.
Hiram, Baseball – Senior catcher
Evan Fairbanks (Chardon, OH/Chardon) recorded a career-high five RBI in an 11-5 win over Otterbein on Friday. Fairbanks also tallied two home runs against the Cardinals to bring his total to 11 career home runs, which is tied for 10th in program history.
Kenyon, Men's Golf – First-year
Jonathan Oakes (Dobbs Ferry, NY/US Performance Academy) led the Owls with a five-under 211 (72-66-73) at the Savanah Invitational for a ninth-place individual finish out of 95 golfers. Oakes' 211 is the second-best individual score in a 54-hole tournament and his 66 is the second best 18-hole mark in program history.
Ohio Wesleyan, Baseball - The Battling Bishops turned five double plays in Monday's 10-6 win over Rhode Island College. The five double plays tied the NCAC record accomplished five times previously, most recently in 2021, and broke the OWU record of four accomplished eight times previously, most recently in 2020.
Ohio Wesleyan, Women's Lacrosse – With a 12-9 win over Washington & Jefferson, the Battling Bishops are tied for third for most wins (5-0) among undefeated NCAA Division III teams.
Wittenberg, Women's Lacrosse – Senior attacker
Jessica Flick (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon) surpassed the 100-goal mark after tallying six scores in a tough overtime loss against Southern Virginia (10-9).
Wooster, Men's Lacrosse - Senior
Vinny DiLeo (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) scored his 100th-career goal in the Fighting Scots' 20-4 win over Mount Union. DiLeo is the ninth 100-goal scorer in program history.
