FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - The American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) announced on April 10th that former Kenyon College swimming and diving coach
Jim Steen was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024.
Being inducted with Steen was Princeton University coach
Rob Orr and Oakland University coach
Peter Hovland.
The ASCA Hall of Fame recognizes the greatest swimming coaches in the United States. Inductees into the Hall of Fame produced world class athletes and winning teams. The coaches in the Hall of Fame are recognized for creating innovative coaching methodologies and developing techniques that have improved and elevated the sport of swimming.
From 1976 to 2012, Steen served as the head coach for Kenyon's men's program. He started the women's program in 1976 and coached those teams through the 2010 season. Under his leadership, the Kenyon men achieved an astounding 31 consecutive NCAA Division III championships, with Steen being credited with 29 of those due to two separate sabbaticals. Similarly, the Kenyon women team secured 17 consecutive national championships and a total of 21 titles during his tenure.
Steen's collection of 50 NCAA Division III team titles stands as the most among any coach in the NCAA, across all sports and divisions. His swimmers achieved remarkable success, capturing 471 NCAA titles and setting 155 NCAA records. Steen developed 328 All-Americans and facilitated his athletes' receipt of 47 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. While at the helm of both programs, the Kenyon men and women each won 23 NCAC conference titles.
Throughout his illustrious career, Steen was recognized with numerous accolades, including being named a 16-time winner (11 men's, 5 women's) of the CSCAA NCAA Division III Coach of the Year award and a 26-time recipient of the ASCA Certificate of Excellence. Additionally, he was named winner of the 1994 National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy, the 1996 ASCA Gold Award of Excellence and, in 2012, the CSCAA's Lifetime Achievement Award.
In September 2023, Steen was inducted into the Kenyon Athletics Hall of Fame.
The ASCA induction ceremony will take place on September 5, 2024, at the Rosen Centre in Orlando during the 2024 ASCA World Clinic.
