2022 NCAC Swim & Dive Championships Central

7350The NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships return to the Trumbull Aquatics Center on the campus of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, for the eighth year. The nation's top Division III conference meet begins on Wednesday, February 9, and runs through Saturday, February 12.

The Kenyon men and the Denison women are defending champions. Overall, Kenyon has won 24 men's and 26 women's championships of the 36 NCAC titles contested. The Denison men are the only team to defeat Kenyon at the NCAC meet, claiming titles in 1997, and 2009-2019. Kenyon recalimed the title in 2020. The Denison women snapped the Ladies' 19-year hold on the league crown in 2004, with Kenyon regaining control of the title from 2005-08, leading to Denison's run of seven straight from 2009-2015. The Ladies won the championship in 2016, 2018 and 2019; The Big Red raised the trophy in 2017 and 2020.

Updated Spectators Policy: Spectators will not be permitted for the Swimming & Diving Championships, scheduled for Feb. 9-12, so that the full squads from all conference teams can participate in the championship meet without any reduction in competitors. Teams will be spaced out appropriately throughout the entire facility, including the spectator seating, in order to de-densify the amount of people on the deck at any one time.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference consists of 10 academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster along with affiliate member Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.

2022 NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships Preview   

 

MEN'S PREVIEWS

Defending champion KENYON enters the 2022 NCAC Swimming and Diving Championship as the No. 4 team in the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III national rankings. The Lords are looking to earn their conference-leading 25th crown with a roster packed full of NCAC-best times this season. Junior Yurii Kosian (Odesa, Ukraine/Odesa School 101) owns the conference's top times this season in both the 100 (47.53) and 200 (1:44.44) backstrokes, while classmate Bryan Fitzgerald (West Bend IN/West Bend East), the defending 400 IM champion, has posted the top NCAC time in the event this season (3:53.82). Senior David Fitch (Conway, MA/Williston Northampton) owns the conference's best time in the 100 fly (46.46) and the second-fastest time in the 200 fly (1:47.07). Sophomore Israel Zavaleta (Mexico City, Mexico/Universidad Del Valle De Mexico) will look to score points for the Lords in the diving well after breaking several program records this season; he owns season-best 11-dive marks of 564.6 points on the one-meter board and 592.95 on the three-meter board. The Lords also enter the conference championship with the top time in the 400 medley relay (3:13.89).


DENISON heads into the championship as the No. 2 team in the CSCAA Div. III national rankings and will look for the program's 13th overall NCAC title. Denison owns nine of the conference's fastest times this season, which includes senior Richie Kurlich's (Kent, OH/Walsh Jesuit) top times in the 100 (54.58) and 200 (2:00.86) breaststrokes, the 200 fly (1:46.96) and the 200 IM (1:49.04). Junior Trey Ike (Horseheads, NY/The Peddie School) is the conference pacesetter in the 50 (19.97) and 100 (44.25) freestyles, while senior Lukas Gately (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) owns the league's top time in the 500 free (4:27.67) and classmate Kyle Verstandig (Albany, NY/Albany Academy) has the NCAC's top 200 free time (1:38.95). In the longest event on the schedule, freshman Luke Conrads (15:29.57) leads all conference athletes with a time of 15:29.57 in the 1650 free. The Big Red also own top times in four relay events in the NCAC, including the 200 (1:20.03), 400 (2:56.45) and 800 (6:40.29) free relays, along with the 200 medley relay (1:27.74).


WABASH looks for its second straight top-three finish in this year's NCAC Championship, a feat the team last accomplished during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. Senior Daren Glore (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) owns several top-15 times in the NCAC, including in the 100 (56.50) and 400 (4:10.22 IMS and in the 1650 (16:35.55) freestyle. Classmate Justin Dusza (Laporte, IN/Laporte) has excelled in the 200 back this season, notching the 12th-fastest NCAC time (1:53.68), while also holding the sixth-best league time in the 100 IM (56.13). Freshman Justice Wenz (Houston, TX/Lutheran North) owns the 13th-best conference time this season in the 200 breast (2:06.87), while senior Isaac Temores (Laporte, IN/Laporte) holds the 13th-best league time in the 100 breast (57.02). In the diving well, junior Tanner Carver (Henryville, IN/OurLady of Providence) and Will Morris (Plainfield, IN/Plainfield) look to score points after putting together strong seasons on the one- and three-meter boards. Others looking to make a splash for the Little Giants include juniors Caleb McCarty (Decatur, IN/Bellmont) and Jacob Penrose (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North) as well as freshmen Conner Craig (Granger, IN/Penn) and Ethan Johns (Carmel, IN/Carmel).
 

DEPAUW looks for its 10th-consecutive top-four finish at this season's NCAC Championship, having never placed lower than fourth since joining the league in the 2011-12 season. The Tigers have several athletes among the top-20 in the conference in the 1,650 free, including sophomore Braden Mallery (Craigsville, IN/Norwell) who owns the 17th-quickest time (17:12.46) and junior Ethan Spencer (Montpelier, VA/Patrick Henry), who owns the 19th-quickest time (17:22.46). Spencer also owns a top-25 NCAC time in the 100 IM (59.51), along with classmate Patrick Unterreiner (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) who holds the 13th-fastest NCAC time in the same event (56.91). Senior Seth Fagen (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Northern) owns the 15th-best conference time in the 200 back (1:56.58), while freshman James Shorney (River Forest, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) holds top times in the NCAC in the freestyle events, securing the 16th-best time in the 100 (46.01) and the 22nd-quickest time in the 50 (21.43). Other contenders to watch include senior Henry Arslanian (Moreland, OH/Hawken), along with freshmen Brock Kinnamon (Plainfield, IN/Plainfield), Will Plumb (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and Anthony Bauer (Elmhurst, IL/York).


WOOSTER is looking to finish in the top half of the NCAC standings for the sixth-straight season. Sophomore Josh Pearson (Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill) has posted top-15 times in the league this season, notching the 10th-best time in the 400 IM (4:07.80), the 11th-fastest time in the 200 fly (1:52.43) and the 14th-best time in the 200 IM (1:53.86). Junior Doak Schultz (Mystic, MN/Osbourn Park (VA)) is the conference front-runner in the 100 IM (54.05), while freshman Damien Donado (Conrad, CA/Clayton Valley) owns top-20 NCAC times in the 100 (53.49) and 200 (1:59.55) backstrokes. Freshman Isaac Shaker (Solon, OH/Solon) also looks to contend with the 16th-fastest league time in the 200 fly (1:56.41). In the diving well, senior Eric Jacques (Columbus, OH/Wellington) looks to score points in both the one and three-meter competitions. Other competitors to watch include freshmen Max Likins (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and Tucker Andrewjeski (Henderson, NV/Green Valley). The Fighting Scots enter the championships with a top-four time in the 200 (1:34.51) and 400 (3:30.18) medley relays.


ALLEGHENY enters the NCAC Championship with a group of talented underclassmen. Freshman Gavin Stuckey (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) has excelled in the backstroke events, posting the 14th-fastest conference time in the 200 (1:55.84) and the 15th-quickest time in the 100 (52.49). Classmate Dan Jackson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) collected a top-20 NCAC time this season in the 200 breast (2:07.43) and a top-25 conference time in the 100 breast (59.04), while earning a top-15 league time in the 400 IM (4:09.38). Junior Pierre Jaeggi (Fountain Valley, CA/Valiant Prep) has earned a top-25 NCAC time in the 100 (51.44) and 200 (1:57.42) butterfly events. Other strong finishes could come from sophomore Joe McNutt (Holly Springs, NC/Holly Springs), who owns top-25 conference times in the 200 fly (1:59.41) and the 400 IM (4:18.28), while senior Jack Van Meter (Altoona, IA/Southeast Polk) owns a top-25 NCAC time in the 400 IM (4:24.29). The Gators will enter the conference championship with a top-four time in the 200 (1:26.48) and 400 (3:10.41) free relays.


OHIO WESLEYAN will rely on a mix of experience at this year's conference championship. Freshman Kevin Zhou (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) has a top-five conference time this season in the 100 IM (55.61), while classmate Dom Novak (Dublin, OH/Coffman) enters with the 22nd-best NCAC time in the 1650 free (17:45.95). Junior Owen Kennedy (Columbus, OH/Bishop Hartley) has swum well in the backstrokes, posting a top-25 league time in the 100 (54.63) and a top-30 time in the 200 (2:04.25). Other potential Battling Bishop contenders include senior Eric Blessman (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) who has registered a top-30 conference time in the mile (18:25.04), and classmate Justin Petty (Cincinnati, OH/West Clermont) who owns a top-25 NCAC time in the 100 IM (1:00.20).


OBERLIN enters the 2022 NCAC Championship with a host of potential scorers, including freshman Myles Felt (Wilton Manors, FL/Fort Lauderdale) who owns a top-10 conference time in the 100 IM (56.20) and a top-20 time in the 400 IM (4:17.56). Freshman Isaac Viviano (Plainwell, MI/Plainwell) heads into the meet with the 18th-best NCAC time in the 100 breast (58.06. Freshman Dylan Bechtold (Osprey, FL/Venice) owns a top-20 conference time in the 1650 (17:17.49), while classmate Jack Stewart (Tolland, CT/Tolland) also owns a top-25 time in the same event (17:53.33). Other contenders to watch include senior Jonathan Hupfield (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) and freshman Nora Holder (Winston-Salem, NC/Atkins Academic Tech).


WITTENBERG will rely on strong finishes from its underclassmen, including sophomore Zach Parkman (Lancaster, OH/Fisher Catholic) who owns the conference's 15th-quickest 200 fly time (1:56.09) this season. Freshman Quaid O'Brien (Hudson, OH/Walsh Jesuit) will provide scoring opportunities as he owns a top-30 time in the mile (18:48.64). Other strong finishes could come from senior Anthony Petruzzi (Medina, OH/Medina), junior Ryan Heighton (Westerville, OH/Westerville North) and freshman Parker Roach (Berrien Springs, MI/Berrien Springs).


HIRAM will have a host of contenders at the NCAC Championship including sophomore Landon Hughes (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) who owns the 22nd-quickest conference time in the 100 IM (59.05) and the 28th-best NCAC time in the 400 IM (4:34.15). In the longest event on the championship slate, the 1650 free, Hughes controls a top-30 time in the league this season (18:52.83). Sophomore Vincent Ahsam-Kreiter (El Sobrante, CA/Saint Mary's College) is a member of the conference's top 30 in the 100 IM (1:00.38), while freshman Dayne Sauter (Bakersfield, CA/Bakersfield) owns an NCAC top-32 time in the same event (1:01.66). Other strong finishes could come from senior Devin Gear (Ravenna, OH/Southeast) and sophomores Jacob Carleton (Cuyahoga Falls, Cuyahoga Falls) and Gabe Farthing (Alexandria, OH/Northridge).


WOMEN'S PREVIEWS

DENISON enters the conference championship ranked third in the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III national rankings. The Big Red captured the 2020 NCAC championship and own 10 titles overall. Junior Tara Culibrk (Belgrade, Serbia/International School of Savremena) currently holds the top time in both the 100 (51.05) and 200 (1:50.49) freestyles, while freshman Alix O'Brien (St. Paul, MN/Apple Valley) enters the conference meet with the league's top times in both the 400 IM (4:22.91) and the 1650 free (16:47.31). O'Brien also has the NCAC's second-best time in the 500 free (4:54.36), while classmate Taryn Wisner (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) has the fastest 500 free (4:51.21) in the NCAC and holds the second-best mark in the 1650 (16:48.85). Freshman Emma Pritchett (Lake Barrington, IL/Barrington) has the second-best time in the league in the 100 (54.78) and 200 (2:03.49) butterfly events. The Big Red also boast this season's quickest time in the 800 free relay (7:23.83) and the 200 medley relay (1:44.00). Freshman Kerstyn Johnson (Lawrenceville, NJ/ Lawrence) will look to score key points for Denison in the diving well. 


KENYON heads into the 2022 NCAC Championship ranked No. 1 in the CSCAA Division III national rankings and aims to earn the programs 27th conference crown. Senior Crile Hart (Pepper Pike, OH/Hawken School) is the defending NCAC champion in the 100 fly, 200 back and the 200 IM and currently holds the conference's top times this season in the 100 (55.05) and 200 (1:57.62) backstrokes, the 100 fly (53.95) and the 200 IM (1:59.30). The junior duo of Alexandra White (Greensboro, NC/Wesleyan Christian Acad.) and Ania Axas (Ludlow, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Acad.) own top times in the league, as White has the fastest 50 free (23.12) and Axas, who finished as the 200 fly runner-up in 2020, enters the 2022 meet with the NCAC's fastest time (2:03.33). Freshmen Jenna Fadely (Siler City, NC/Jordan Matthews) and Gabby Wei (Hong Kong/Hong Kong International) lead the NCAC in the breaststroke, as Fadely has the top time in the 100 (1:02.09) and Wei has the fastest time in the 200 (2:13.27). Kenyon also holds the fastest times in the 200 (1:31.67) and 400 (3:21.84) free relays as well as the 400 medley relay (3:41.81).


ALLEGHENY is coming off a third-place finish in 2020, its best performance since landing in the top three in 2011. Junior Ariana Clark (Freeport, PA/Freeport) owns NCAC top-20 times in the backstroke with the 14th-fastest 200 (2:10.53) and 19th-best 100 (1:00.36), while sophomore Olivia Kraus (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) owns the NCAC's 15th-fastest time in the 100 free (52.63). Senior Sadie Brown (Portland, OR/Pacific Crest Community) and junior Maggie Bilquin (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) have top times within the conference rankings, as Brown is 16th in the 100 fly (59.03) and Bilquin is top-22 in the 100 (1:09.02) and 200 (2:29.91) breaststrokes. Junior Maggie Baham (Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) sits among the top-21 in the league in the 200 fly (2:15.50), while freshman Katya Pryshchenko (Berwyn, PA/Aim Academy) is 16th in the 1650 free (19:09.97). Others looking to make a splash for the Gators include junior Emily Spitz (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) and sophomore Liv Ave (Columbus, OH/Whetstone). Allegheny also has the third-fastest 400 medley relay time in the league this season (4:00.76).


DEPAUW looks for another top-four finish in this year's standings, as the Tigers have never placed lower than fourth since joining the league for the 2011-12 season. Senior Molly Ruggles (Westfield, IN/Westfield) currently holds the fastest 100 IM time (1:00.50) and the eighth-best 100 back (58.05) in the NCAC. Rookie Elise Umbach (Evansville, IN/F.J. Reitz) owns top-15 times in five different events, including the 100 (1:01.60), 200 (2:07.82) and 400 (4:31.70) IM, and the 100 (1:06.48) and 200 (2:23.04) breaststrokes, while classmates Tara Holder (Cicero, IN/Hamilton Heights) and Megan Mackenzie (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) also have top times in the league. Holder owns top-15 times in the 200 (1:54.58) and 500 (5:07.05) freestyles and Mackenzie has a top 12 1650 free time (18:25.68). Sophomore Margaret Perry (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) is top-16 among NCAC athletes in the 50 free (24.00) and the 100 back (59.88), while classmate Hailey Olsen (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles) has the 15th-fastest NCAC time in the 200 back (2:10.99). Other contenders to watch include senior Samantha Waples (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and junior Tarah Lang (Marshall, MI/Marshall). DePauw is top three in four relay events, including the 200 (1:36.69), 400 (3:32.80) and 800 (7:56.42) free relays and the 200 medley relay (1:46.58).

WOOSTER is aiming for its sixth-straight top-five finish at the NCAC Championship. Sophomore Maddie Becker (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) is a top-two seed in the NCAC in the 100 IM (1:00.56), while senior Molly Likins (Saint Clair, MI/Saint Clair) is right behind Becker with the third-fastest time (1:01.35). Likins also holds a top-seven time in the NCAC in the 100 breast (1:05.32). Senior Madison Whitman (Wooster, OH/Wooster) and freshman Ollie Bream (Pinehurst, TX/Firbank Grammar School (Australia)) have produced top-20 times in the conference, as Bream is top-five in the 200 fly (2:05.08) and No. 16 in both the 200 (2:09.80) and 400 (4:39.53) IM events, while Whitman is top-eight in the 200 breast (2:22.69). Freshman Hallie Findlan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) has top-10 times in the league in the 50 (23.85) and 100 (52.22) freestyles, while classmate Mariam Zayour (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) is No. 19 in the 200 back (2:13.66). Sophomore Emma Connors (Moon Twp., PA/Moon Area) holds a top-12 time in the NCAC in the mile (18:04.92). Another contender to watch on the Wooster roster includes junior Kay Wetmore (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty). The Fighting Scots have top-four times in the NCAC in the 200 (1:38.66) and 800 (8:09.19) free relays and in the 200 medley relay (1:47.33).


OHIO WESLEYAN will rely on a mix of experience including contributions from senior Katie Rozsa (Silver Lake, OH/Cuyahoga Falls) who enters the meet with the NCAC's fifth-fastest time in the 100 IM (1:01.97). Rozsa also holds three top-30 times in the NCAC in the 100 (1:02.46) and 200 (2:13.78) backstrokes and in the 200 freestyle (1:57.63), while owning OWU's quickest 50 free time (26.01). Junior Evelyn VanderVelde (Holland, MI/Holland) has posted top-20 times in the league including the No. 18 time in the 100 breast (1:08.27) and the No. 19 time in the 400 IM (4:46.88), to go along with the Battling Bishops' fastest 200 IM time (2:15.76). Sophomore Siarra Hoover (Frazeysburg, OH/Newark Licking Valley) has recorded the 11th-fastest NCAC time in the 100 IM (1:04.58) and the 23rd-best time in the 200 breast (2:33.98). Senior Leigh Stavar (Perry, OH/Perry) leads Ohio Wesleyan with the team's top times in the 500 (5:42.72) and 1650 (20:14.24) freestyles, while senior Meredith Richters (Troy, OH/Miami East) owns the top times on the roster for the 100 (1:01.30) and 200 (2:16.22) butterfly events. Freshman Lily Davis (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) holds the fastest OWU 100 free time (58.01), while classmate Aniya Johnson (Sutton, NE/Sutton) has been solid for the Bishops in the diving well. OWU will also see contributions from Josie Stark (Sandusky, OH/Margaretta), as she competes in the conference championship after a strong rookie campaign.
 

OBERLIN will depend on a strong core of rookies in the pool at the NCAC Championships. Between the lane lines, the Yeowomen will look for production from freshman Bella Sites (Dripping Springs, TX/Dripping Springs) who enters the NCAC championship with six top-22 times in the league in the 100 (1:05.31) and 400 (4:50.51) IM, the 500 (5:15.89) and 1650 (19:27.67) freestyles and in the 200 back (2:13.89). Freshman Charlotte Hantus (Gate Mills, OH/Mayfield) holds the 18th-fastest time in the NCAC in the 1650 free (19:22.14), while classmate Ava Peyton (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo-Atherton) has the No. 14 time in the 100 back (59.79). Freshman Ellie Frost (South Haven, MI/South Haven) leads the Yeowomen in the 100 fly (1:00.53) and in the 50 (24.66) and 100 (54.35) freestyles. Rookies Ava Schigur (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) and Skye Slade (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) hold top times for Oberlin, Schigur in the 200 fly (2:21.95) and Slade in the 100 breast (1:12.55). Senior Kate Raphaely (Bryn Mawr, PA/Friends Central) holds the fastest 200 breast time (2:41.33) on the roster and classmate Sophia Schnake (Danville, IN/Indiana Academy for Science, Math & Humanities) will look to produce points in the diving well. Other contenders to watch include sophomores Hannah Hale (Ellicott City, MD) and Aubrey Weber (Aurora, OH/Peddie School) and freshmen Ava Schigur (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) and Isabel Pfaff (East Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County).
 

HIRAM will be led by senior Carlee Lisser (Medina, OH/Medina), who holds the top time in five different championship events for the Terriers. Lisser owns the 24th-fastest time in the NCAC in the 100 IM (1:08.65) and leads Hiram in the 100 (59.12), 200 (2:12.99), and 500 (5:40.12) freestyles along with the top time for the Terriers in the 200 back (2:31.20). Freshman Adrianna Klepper (Uniontown, OH/Green) will join Lisser in the backstroke as the rookie has the team's fastest 100 (1:11.47) this season. Junior Carrie Robinson (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) owns Hiram's quickest 1650 free (25:02.29) this season, while sophomore Elena Rinaldi (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) owns a handful of the Terriers' top times. Rinaldi holds the top times for her team in the 50 free (27.13), the 100 (1:04.17) and 200 (2:34.77) fly events and the 200 (2:36.98) and 400 (5:39.06) IMs. Sophomore Lilly MacDonald (North Ridgeville, OH/North Ridgeville) leads the Terriers in both breaststroke events with the fastest 100 (1:15.25) and 200 (2:47.85) times. Other contenders to watch include sophomores Moraine Jackson (Solon, OH/Solon) and Madelyn Sagle (Backlick, OH/Licking Heights) and freshman Natalie Brown (Hudson, OH/Hudson).
 

WITTENBERG seniors Abby Dunasky (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington)Emma Hellmann (Cincinnati, OH/Summit Country Day) and Sophia Spriggs (Springfield, OH/Shawnee) enter their final NCAC Championship for the Tigers. Dunasky has been one of the top distance racers for Wittenberg this season, owning the conference's 17th-fastest time in the 1650 free (19:20.43), while also leading her team in the 100 breast (1:20.98). Hellmann will look to score points for the Tigers in the diving well after breaking several program records this season. Juniors Bridget Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) and Michelle Murray (New Carlisle, OH/Tecumseh) will look to make an impact in the pool, as Logan holds the 16th-fastest time in the NCAC in the 100 IM (1:05.60) and leads her team in both the 50 (25.08) and 100 (55.62) freestyles, while Murray leads the Tigers in the 200 back (2:30.42). Another contender in the pool will be sophomore Mackenzie Schuld (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) who holds the 23rd-quickest NCAC time in the 400 IM (4:53.01) and leads her team in the 100 fly (1:02.73), 100 back (1:06.92), 200 IM (2:22.50), and both the 200 (2:05.35) and 500 (5:24.54) freestyles. Another contender to watch on the Wittenberg roster includes freshman Carissa Schroeder.
